Ok scabs listen up, some of my favorite classic horror films happen to be classic ghost films, so what do you think is the best classic ghost/haunted house film, hey creeps!?

Legend of Hell House would be my first choice. Although Ghost & Mr Chicken is a close second.

I have to go with the original Haunting... I just love the camera angles and sweeps, and the ambiguity... Hell House a close second... and I still need to see the Innocents... damn it...

I have to agree with Richard. The Haunting is way above all other ghost stories, as far as I am concerned.

I saw The Innocents not too long ago, and it's a strong contender for second place.

The Changeling might deserve a place on the list as well.

The House on Haunted Hill

And I agree with Victoria about The Changeling. If I would have chose "other" that would have been my choice.

"The Haunting", I love the way it was made and the story works on a couple of different levels.

I almost voted for The Haunting, but in the end i went with The Legend Of Hell House.
I love the idea of the house being so closed off and that the previous owner being such a deviant. For some strange reason , all this made the film much more creepier and interesting.

Has to be The Haunting. The scene where something is holding the main characters hand still gets me. Easily the scariest "G rated" movie ever.

'The Haunting', easily, but I do have lots of love for 'The Changeling' and ' The Legend of Hell House', too. I've never seen 'The Innocents', one of these days, I'm gonna check it out.

Agree with the concern about the Changeling being left out.

However, ghost/haunted house movies are 2 different things. For ghost movies I go with THE ENTITY, while for haunted house, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE.

I was most impressed by The Innocents, and it works on so many levels: as a psychological study, as a thriller (that scene at the french windows!), and as a literary adaptation. Top performances from Deborah Kerr as the high-strung governess and Martin Stephens as her unnaturally knowing charge. The Others, with Nicole Kidman, was heavily influenced by this film.

May I also put in a good word for The Cat and the Canary (1927), the original haunted house comedy-thriller, available on DVD.

Voted for The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Knotts was hilarious. Great comedy but still suspenseful.
