Sounds great to me. I can't see how anyone can have a problem with Speilberg. He made Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Duel, Jurrasic Park, Close Encounters of the 3rd kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. And I don' have a problem with Cruise. I thought he was very good in Collateral and preety good in Last Samuari. He's fine for the lead role. I'm more interested in who else might be in smaller roles.

Whoa, 200th post. Bitchin.

there are suppposedly two remakes of the property being made. Pendragon Pictures was in preproduction on a movie based more closely to the HG Wells book, while Cruise/Speilbergs is a MODERNS retale.

I think if they both are done, and well enough, they could be interesting bookends.

I would've looked forward to it a lot more if they had set in the 19th century, like it's supposed to be.

As it stands now, it's "ID4" with Tom Cruise. But I'm taking a "wait-and-see" attitude.

i think people need to get past calling something like this a remake. it's a re-adaptation, and the original adaptation didn't do the book justice, hence, perfectly valid reason to go back.

cf The Thing.

would anyone realistically call Lord of the Rings a live action remake of the Bakshi films? or, any dracula film a remake of any previous dracula film?

war of the worlds is classic literature. it has been adapted into music, into film, into radio play... just as has others like frankenstein, jekyll and hyde, and so on. this to me wouldn't be a remake unless it's being solely drawn from George Pal's film.

ID4 was and always will be crap. there was zero genuine emotion in that film. new york gets wiped out by a huge wall of death, millions die, and i'm meant to be happy because one dog survives it? please.

and the president getting in the jet fighter... that stuff doesn't play outside of the states.

war of the worlds like i said, has more in common with fellowship. id4 follows a few groups of different people through a disaster in more of a traditional disaster movie... where as war sits on the shoulders of one character.

The dog was in LA actually.

Good point on ID4. It had more in common with Earthquake or the The Towering Inferno than War of the Worlds. And yeah not a remake in my book either.

I pray they don't remake this one.My father and I loved the original and if they come out with a remake it will ruin the original.

I don't understand this way of thinking. Why will a remake "ruin" the original? My opinion of the original Dawn of the Dead, psycho, texas chainsaw massacre, etc.. was not ruined in any way because of their remakes (good or bad). Please explain

The original did a good enough job of ruining the original...one of the most ridiculous endings of all time.

At least 'ID4' was dumb in a fun way.

I can't wait for the new 'War of the Worlds', at the very least it will be better than the first version; you just cannot go wrong with Cruise and Spielberg.

No one can top Orson Wells pulling the ultimate scare, so its a remake of a remake of a.. doesn't bother me one bit. Loved the book, the radio broadcast, the movie, will a remake kill me, no it won't.

I'll check it out, because it's Spielberg's take on a story that obviously influenced him as a kid. In my eyes, it's as literary a turn for him as "Schindler's List." Cruise I can take or leave, but I have a feeling the movie will be pretty good.

As long as Tom Cruise doesn't morph into old Tom Cruise at the end and start crying, I'll be happy.

When tom had the movie writes, he was planning on making a faithfull adaption to the book. Then he did something stupid, he sold the writes to mr (hey lets make a mordern day version) Speilberg.
Tom has sold his soul for the sakes of a main roll.
I will not be going to see this!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is going to be one of the most expensive movies ever made, by argueablely the greatest director of our generation, staring one of the greatest actors in Hollywood. Let's not forget that this is going to be based on a powerfull story that has sent people into panic when played over the radio in the past. I cannot wait to see how this thing is going to turn out. Hell, any cinema affectiando should be frothing at the mouth in anticipation of this movie.

I hope they keep it as dark, and gut twisting as the original. The original War of the World's aliens were creepy, and terrifying. I hope they capture that in this movie.

I also hope it doesn't end up being a cheeseball summer action movie with feel good messages. We already have a movie like that with the backdrop of an intergalactic war......it was called Independence Day. To really make this movie cool, you need to instill the feeling of hopelessness and terror all the way up untill the last 5 minutes. You need to make the audience writhe as humans are slaughtered mercilessly by alien invaders.

I'm still not going out of my way to see this. I made it through the remakes, or re-adaptations, of "Planet of the Apes" and "The Time Machine"; unless I see some evidence that this one will be much better than they were, my opinion of it won't change. I have nothing against Spielberg or Cruise, but then I also have nothing against Tim Burton.

Why the grudge against remakes? I really don't understand it, it's like saying that Shakespeare was the only person allowed to run his plays. It's like saying you can only interpret a book one way. I think it's a very narrow minded approach to media.

Where did I say a had a grudge against remakes? Just because I was disappointed by the ones I listed?

It was the tone of your post. "I made it through remakes.." makes it sound as if you are not happy that they are remaking, or readapting certain books and movies. I apologize if I misinterpreted what you were getting at.

Yeah, I was afraid I might have put things poorly in that post. What I should say is this: I don't have anything against the idea of remakes, but after seeing some of them that have come out, I don't have great expectations for War of the Worlds. It might turn out to be good, but I remember thinking that about Burton's "Planet of the Apes", too. Not to mention "The Haunting" and the 70s version of "King Kong".

This seems to be just another event in a history of bad ideas. I agree with Dawnrazor about Speilberg and Cruise.

That being said, I'll propbably see it, but I'm kind of expecting it to be more Independence Day and less War of the Worlds and that ain't a good thing. -"goblyn"

Yeah, I might have been interested if it had been a real adaptation. Spielberg could have gotten the budget to film Well's story properly and I would have loved to have seen that...The giant Martian war machines striding through London, etc.

Considering it's been updated to the present day, it's from the director of ET and Raiders of the Lost Ark and stars an untalented pretty boy of unfathomable popularity I'm expecting Independence Day 2
