The following is taken from the Scifi channel's website. I know it may be more in the genre of sci fi then horror but i would say there should be some elements of horror so bare with me people cause this news excites me.
War Speeds Into Production
Steven Spielberg will make his upcoming H.G. Wells adaptation War of the Worlds in a breathtaking eight months, from the start of filming Nov. 7 to the June 29, 2005, release date, Variety reported. Shooting in New York and New Jersey, the director will film the movie's big action sequences first, to give Industrial Light & Magic time to complete the estimated 500 visual-effects shots, the trade paper reported. Principal photography will take 75 days.
In the first weeks of shooting, production included action sequences with alien forces bombing streets, ripping up sidewalks and blasting apart buildings in industrial-type areas, the trade paper reported. By the second week of filming, sequences were already being shipped to ILM, and by the time production wraps, ILM will either have finished or be working on at least half the effects shots, the trade paper reported. Tom Cruise stars in the update of Wells' classic Martian-invasion story.
It is going to be filmed practically in my backyard ohhh yeah

The Official War of the Worlds Thread
Yep, in my Top Ten must see movies of 2005.
I would've looked forward to it a lot more if they had set in the 19th century, like it's supposed to be.
As it stands now, it's "ID4" with Tom Cruise. But I'm taking a "wait-and-see" attitude.

Spielberg and Cruise... :puke:
I pretty much agree with Dawn on Cruise, but you can always say this much about Spielberg: At least he's not George Lucas.
I pray they don't remake this one.My father and I loved the original and if they come out with a remake it will ruin the original.
I look forward to passing this one up. It won't ruin the original if we don't watch it.
Well, non of your options really. I am neither looking forward to it, nor not looking forward to it, nor do I not give a rats ass. I'll make up my mind later.
I could care less really.
I love the original, and it was an update (set during the time the film was made) from the novel, which I also love. I'll see it.
YES
One word: Spielberg
One word: Spielberg
hell noo
one of my favourite films of all time
one of my favourite films of all time
I won't pass judgement until AFTER I see it ;)
Looks good to me.
This seems to be just another event in a history of bad ideas. I agree with Dawnrazor about Speilberg and Cruise.
That being said, I'll propbably see it, but I'm kind of expecting it to be more Independence Day and less War of the Worlds and that ain't a good thing.

This is one I'll definitely be checking out.
i'm not a fan of cruise or spielberg (well, i like early spielberg quite a lot but i digress) but i'm not anti them either. i won't go see something because either of them are involved, but then nor will i avoid it. cruise isn't the turn off that say, tom hanks, is for me.
i love the original novel, and the prospect of seeing the martian landing machines realised as written is enough to get me excited here. the original adaptation was very good, but it lacked when it came to the martian landers and the martians themselves.
war of the worlds should be epic to do the book justice. it's almost like lord of the rings in that it tells the story of a long journey while this epic conflict is going on. that hasn't been done justice yet.
i'm not overly hopeful that this time that will be realised, but i am definately looking forwards to finding out if it's been achieved.

The original novel was surprisingly unnerving, especially the section where the narrator was trapped in the destroyed country home and realized he was in the heart of a martian base. When we find out what the martians are doing to captured humans...
That's why the time period does not bother me. Although visually it would be neat to see something like the warship's kamikaze attack on the tripod. But the essence of the book was the narrator's journey and his episodic encounters with different groups and single people all attempting to survive in a seemingly hopeless situation. There might even be a greater impact in today's even more high tech dependency society. Especially when the martians demise comes from simple germs not human tech. In terms of plot there is a ID4 similiarity (by the way I kind of liked ID4, what can I say..). But it will come down to spectacle and mood. ID4 lacked the terror and menace of the book. But Speilberg is more than capable of pulling this off. Sure he's had a couple of misfire films but he does not deserve the bad rep assigned to him.
And Cruise. Cruise is Cruise. What can you do? Not a turn off, not a turn on although I would prefer a more everyman actor. But I would prefer a more everyman approach in casting in about any film, especially horror. It's a personal hang-up.
